Description: The formal name for this little beach is The Children’s Pool. It was created in 1931 with the construction of a concrete breakwater donated by early La Jolla resident and philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps. In this picture, powerful winter surf crashes against the breakwater at high tide, creating geysers of foam. The effect is amplified by the backwash from a previous wave. Behind the shelter of the breakwater wall, seals snooze on the warm sand, apparently oblivious to the commotion in the sea. (The locals’ name, the Casa, comes from the Casa de Mañana across the street, once an elegant international hotel and now a retirement community.) A subtle partial watercolor technique softens the impact of the waves and makes the towering foam more physical.
